How to Export ChatGPT Chat History (and What You Get)
Export your ChatGPT chat history from Data controls, download the ZIP before the link expires, and know which plans and workspaces support self-service export.
Want a copy of everything you’ve asked ChatGPT? OpenAI lets you export your ChatGPT chat history as a ZIP file from the settings menu. The export is free on personal plans, but it can take a while to arrive and the download link only works for a short time. Here’s how to request it, what to expect, and what to do if the option isn’t there.
Quick answer: Open Settings › Data controls, select Export under Export data, and then confirm. When the email arrives, download the ZIP within 24 hours while you’re signed in to the same account.
Who can export ChatGPT chat history
Before you start, check which kind of account you use. According to OpenAI’s Help Center:
- Free, Plus, and Pro accounts can use the self-service export.
- ChatGPT Edu users can export if their workspace is eligible. Third-party guides say this depends on an administrator turning it on and the workspace not using a data residency setup.
- ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces don’t offer self-service export. If your chats live in one of these workspaces, contact your workspace owner. The organization manages data access there.
If you use both a personal account and a work workspace, make sure you’re signed in to your personal account before you request the export.
How to export your ChatGPT data on the web
The web version at chatgpt.com is the most reliable place to do this.
- Sign in at chatgpt.com.
- Click your profile icon and open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Next to Export data, click Export.
- Select Confirm export on the confirmation screen.
That’s all you do on the ChatGPT side. OpenAI prepares the file in the background, so you can close the tab.
On the mobile app
The ChatGPT app also has the option under Settings › Data Controls › Export Data. Labels can differ slightly between app versions, and on some devices the process sends you to the web. If you can’t find the option in the app, use chatgpt.com in a browser with the same account.
Download the export before the link expires
When the file is ready, ChatGPT sends you an email. Accounts that only use a phone number get a text message instead.
Keep these limits in mind:
- It can take up to 7 days. Don’t panic if nothing arrives the same day.
- The link expires after 24 hours. Download the file as soon as you see the message.
- You must be signed in to the same account that requested the export, or the download won’t work.
- Only the latest request counts. If you click Export several times, OpenAI fulfills the most recent request and cancels the earlier ones. Repeated clicks won’t speed things up.
If the link expires, go back to Data controls and request a new export.
What’s inside the ChatGPT export file
The download is a ZIP file. OpenAI describes it as your chat history plus other relevant account data. Unzip it on your computer to see the contents.
Third-party guides that walked through the archive usually mention two main files:
- chat.html, a page you can open in any web browser to read your conversations.
- conversations.json, a structured file with your messages and their metadata. It’s the one to use if you want to search your history with a script or move it into another tool.
Some guides list a few extra JSON files as well. OpenAI doesn’t publish an official file list, so the exact contents may change.
A few things the export is not:
- It isn’t a backup you can restore. You can’t import the ZIP back into ChatGPT to rebuild your sidebar or settings.
- It doesn’t recover deleted chats. Conversations you deleted before the export aren’t included.
- It doesn’t delete anything. Your chats and memories stay in your account after the export.
Treat the ZIP like any other private document. It may contain personal or work details you’ve shared with ChatGPT, so don’t leave it in a shared folder.
If you can’t sign in: use the Privacy Portal
The export button only works while you’re logged in. If you’ve lost access to your account, OpenAI points you to its Privacy Portal:
- Go to OpenAI’s Privacy Portal.
- Select Make a Privacy Request.
- Choose the option for a consumer ChatGPT account.
- Select Download my data and follow the prompts.
Make sure you can still reach the email inbox or phone number linked to the account. You may be asked to verify that the account belongs to you.
How to save just one conversation
The data export is all or nothing. If you only need one chat, there’s no separate export button in Data controls. Simpler options work fine:
- Copy the text of the conversation into a document and save it.
- Print to PDF from your browser (Ctrl + P on Windows, Cmd + P on Mac, then choose Save as PDF). Browser extensions that export single chats also exist, but they’re made by third parties, not OpenAI. Check what permissions an extension asks for before you give it access to your conversations.
If the export option is missing or nothing arrives
- No Export button: you’re probably in a Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspace. Check which account or workspace you’re signed in to, or ask your workspace owner.
- No email after a few days: check your spam and promotions folders. The export can take up to a week.
- Link says it expired: request a new export. Old links can’t be renewed.
- Mobile app doesn’t show the option: use chatgpt.com in a desktop or mobile browser instead.
One final tip: if you’re exporting because you plan to delete your account or clear your history, wait until you’ve downloaded and opened the ZIP. Make sure it contains the conversations you need before you remove anything.
